INTRODUCTION
My name is Kylee Robertson and I’m from a city near Boston. I grew up giving 110% in anything I did, whether it be my schoolwork, dancing or competitive cheerleading team. I always looked up to the overachievers, the honor students that were three-season varsity athletes and joined every after-school club. Once I reached high school, however, I quickly learned that I couldn’t keep up with this kind of lifestyle. I struggled with academic anxiety and suffered numerous injuries, one of which being a severe concussion that completely knocked me off course. I fell so far behind that I ended up switching schools and repeating sophomore year. Eventually, I got a name for my anxieties: obsessive compulsive disorder.
During junior and senior year, I was in and out of residential programs where I completed therapeutic treatment and academic work simultaneously. It was a difficult period of my life, but I was able to get through it with the support of my family and best friend. By the end of it all, I had received my high school diploma and was matched with Biggs, my psychiatric service dog. After a gap year, I started applying to college. Wanting to prove to myself that I could function independently like other young adults my age, I chose to go out-of-state to the University of Maryland. Although I was anxious about attending such a large school, I was comforted knowing I would be a part of College Park Scholars, a living-learning community for freshmen and sophomores.
I have loved every second of my time at UMD and as a part of the Scholars Public Leadership program. What I want to get out of my time here in College Park (alongside a degree, of course) is the confidence to use my talents and skills in order to construct the future I want. This portfolio is a snapshot of my growth from freshman year, containing papers and reflections, as well as descriptions of my extracurricular experiences.
