THREE SEMESTER REVIEW
My understanding of leadership has evolved so much since the beginning of my time at UMD. I came into Public Leadership unsure that I wasn't even qualified for the program. All my life I thought that leaders were perfect, that they could handle everything thrown at them with confidence and poise. After severely struggling with my anxiety disorders, I thought that I just didn't have what it takes to be a leader; I wasn't calm, or levelheaded, or anywhere close to being self-assured. Honestly, I selected Public Leadership as my first choice because I wasn't confident I would succeed in any of the other Scholars programs.
After taking my first Public Leadership class, I realized that there was more to leadership than innate confidence. A huge of part of leadership is knowing how to work with other people, both within and between organizations. Although I deal with social anxiety, I have high emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills that I learned in cognitive-behavioral therapy. I am resilient when facing setbacks and can organize goals into a scaffolded plan of doable, individual steps. From my past three semesters as a Public Leadership Scholar, I learned that leadership isn't about your innate skillset, but the accountability you take as a leader when you assume the role. Anyone who is willing to take initiative can be a leader, you just need to commit yourself to bettering yourself in terms of the necessary skills it takes to be a successful leader.

Leadership Outside the Classroom...
One extracurricular activity that has allowed me to practice and apply my leadership skills is being a member of The Residence Hall Association. During my freshman year, I served as a floor representative and VP of Programming and Community Development for Cumberland Hall. This year, I am a senator for the Denton Community, and serve on the Diversity and Inclusion Action Committee and the Dining Services Advisory Board.
